Merry Christmas Eve, everyone!!
It has been a hectic day in the Miller household (along with everyone else in the world). We've been busy finalizing the last of our Christmas preparations - rearranging a small bit of furniture to accommodate the table extension and clearing out remaining clutter left laying around from our big room swaps earlier this month. (I still need to blog about that, too. Huh. Someday, folks. Someday.) My parents rolled into town around lunch and were a huge help getting stuff moved around and keeping an eye on the wee one so I could feel productive.
Miller & I also wanted to get a head start on as much food prep/cooking/baking as possible. We're being ambitious and hoping to tackle prime rib, fried turkey, sides and two pies. Biting off more than we can chew? Maybe. But the end result should be damn tasty. I wanted to get the two pies baked today since they required the most work and will leave me free tomorrow to handle the sides. After lunch I got to work making the pie crusts and the power went out. Initially I thought we had blown a fuse so my dad headed over to the circuit breaker. Before he could even get there the power came back on. Whew. Disaster averted.
And then the power went out again. We sat around for a short while thinking that it was probably surging due to the ridiculously heavy winds. Everyone was in great spirits. Tick, tick, tick, tick. Fast forward a couple hours and we realize that the house is starting to get a little cold (because we have no electricity to run the heater). We start a fire in the fireplace. Tick, tick, tick, tick. Fast forward a couple more hours and we realize that the house is starting to get dark. We start lighting candles. Tick, tick, tick, tick. Fast forward a couple more hours and I'm starting to go bananas because it's too dark to read anymore and my eyes are going crazy from having the fire as my only source of light. SIX HOURS later the power finally comes back on.
Apparently some power lines were knocked down due to the crazyass winds. I get it, shit happens. But for the love of all that is holy, did it have to happen on Christmas Eve as I was getting ready to start baking?? I didn't get to start my pies until 8pm and I just now sat down. My feet hurt. At least I got a cute picture of S.B.G. all bundled up while it was getting chilly in the house. (When it was all said & done, our house had gotten down to 65°.)

It's been a rough week - I'm glad tomorrow is Friday (and Christmas). Santa stopped by our house earlier and dropped off all of S.B.G.'s presents (fully assembled) and I'm ready to hit the sack. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas!!!
