8. Get Lasik

I can officially see without glasses or contacts!!!

I finished all of my eye procedures last Wednesday and am officially in recovery mode. My vision is still a little blurry (while my eyes heal), and it looks like my astygmatism will need to be corrected, but the fact that I can literally wake up in the middle of the night and see the alarm clock is an amazing thing.

For any of you out there with crazy, bad vision that don't qualify for Lasik, I would highly recommend you look into the Visian ICL procedure I had done. Dr. Caplan at the Berkley Eye Center was absolutely fantastic.

98. Watch a new movie each month (June)

Joyce asked for a recap of The Love Guru, so here goes....

I'm typically a huge Mike Meyers fan. Nothing in the world can top So I Married an Axe Murderer. Unfortunately, this movie was a huge miss for me. It had a great premise (i.e. - absolutely ridiculous) and could have been a riot, but they totally lost me with the incessant bathroom humor. I can only take so many penis references (which is probably why I don't care for Will Ferrell movies, either).

Luckily for me, I was at Alamo Drafthouse and drinking lots of beer, otherwise I don't know if I would have made it all the way through the movie. Sorry, Mike.

In an attempt to liven up this post, I'll leave you with a classic clip from my favorite Mike Meyers movie:

85. Try 20 new beers (3-7/20)

This past Friday, Miller & I went to Alamo Draft House to see The Love Guru (more on that later). In an attempt to help complete my 101 Goal (or maybe to just get me drunk & take advantage of me...who knows), we decided to go with a beer cornucopia instead of our typical bucket-o-MillerLite.

Beer #1: Real Ale Devil's Backbone
If I have to drink a Real Ale beer, I'd probably go with the Fireman's #4. BUT, since this is a seasonal release beer Miller decided to give it a shot. The first sip taste was a little strong for my palate, but being a true beer drinker means I have to give it another taste. I can't really put my finger on what I didn't care for about this beer (too much yeast?), but it definitely wasn't my style. After a solid two sips, I politely passed the rest of my beer off to the husband.

Beer #2: Pilsner Urquell
Yum...MUCH better than the Devil's Backbone! "The Original Pilsner" is really quite good. It supposedly has more hops than other pilsner beers, but I didn't really notice the stronger flavor. I thought it was very crisp and clean. After poking around on the internet to get some links/pictures for Pilsner Urquell, I also discovered that they sponsor an International Photography Contest (the photos on their website are AMAZING), and even have a flash game online. FYI - the game is sexist, and totally not work appropriate. It is pretty hilarious though. Consider yourself warned.

Beer #3: Stone IPA
One word: Yuck. Way too much hops and too bitter for my taste. I was done after the first sip. Okay, that was more than one word.

Beer #4: Bavaria
Loved this one and went back for seconds. It was the lightest of the 4 beers I sampled and really complimented my DraftHouse pizza quite nicely. :) It tasted the most like the beers I am used to drinking and is definitely beer I would come back to at another time. Miller also informed me that it is a "cheap" beer in Europe. What is it with me and "cheap" beer???

Beer #5: Yuengling Premium Beer
Okay, so I didn't drink this one on Friday at Alamo. I drank this one weekend on my business trip in New Jersey when Miller came up for a visit. I forgot to blog about drinking this beer because I forgot a lot of stuff about that night. My only review of this beer is that it got me REALLY DRUNK.

52. Watch the entire list: AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies

Vertigo had been sitting in the house (courtesy of Netflix) for quite a while. Similar to my experience with Casablanca, I had basically seen this movie in parts but had yet to see the movie start-to-finish.

I always enjoyed Alfred Hitchcock movies. I think that his ability to tell stories that not only translate to the big screen but also appeal to our psyches is a great talent. You tend to walk away from a Hitchcock film going, "hmmm..."

Watching the re-mastered version of the film was also pretty cool. The sights of San Francisco used in the film were amazing...I really want to visit the California Palace of the Legion of Honor now. That place is absolutely beautiful.

Anyhow...I digress. The movie was good. Definitely a classic and definitely deserving of a top 10 place in the AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies list.

10. Get a physical

This one is done. I don't really know what else to say about it since I don't care to share the deets of my doctor visit. They did take blood for some lab work and I've yet to get the results back, but otherwise the doctor said I was healthy & doing good. I'll feel a lot better about the whole thing once the labs come back clear, but I'm not expecting anything out of the ordinary.

PS: For you Austin southies looking for a "regular" doctor, I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Stewart Browning @ the Austin Regional Clinic off Brodie Ln. He used to be more centrally located and I followed him to the south office because I couldn't bear to lose him as my doc!

Think of Something Creative to Say

I got tagged last week and really had been trying to come up with something witty & creative. That....and I forgot.

So, here's the game:

  1. Write your own six-word memoir.
  2. Post it to your blog including a visual illustration if you would like.
  3. Link to the person who tagged you in your post and to this original post http://herebaby.blogspot.com/2008/06/six-word-memior.html if possible so we can track it as it travels across the blogsphere.
  4. Tag 5 more blogs with links
  5. Don’t forget to leave a comment in the tagged blogs with an invitation to play.

Simple enough. Given the events that have consumed my life the past week, I decided to write something that would be appropriate should I drop dead in the next 24 hours (knock on wood). With that being said, I reveal to you my 6-word memoir!

I can see with one eye.

And that, my friends, is about the extent of my creativity these days. And now for the blog-tagging. Amy, Kristen&Doyle, Nathalie, Nisha, & Tanya1975; consider yourselves tagged!!

"Because It's My Birthday!!"

I had a birthday last Friday and was lucky enough to already be in Houston (for work) so I was actually able to celebrate it with my parents this year. My mom always gets sentimental on my birthday, counting down each hour of the day ("exactly 28 years ago I was starting to feel contractions....exactly 28 years ago I was screaming for the epidural..."). Miller also was in town because I made him be here -- shoot, he is my husband!

I had been telling my mom about the greatness of yellow cake with chocolate frosting so she promised to make one for my birthday. She did not disappoint. It was delish. I wish I had an actual picture of the cake she made, but we ate it a little too quickly for the camera. Oops.

In keeping with the yellow-theme, a very nice delivery man showed up at our door with a beautiful bouquet:

Since my parents moved to Sugar Land a couple years ago, we really don't get to take advantage of the fresh seafood out of the Gulf too often. Since my birthday just happened to fall on a Friday this year, we decided to make the "long" trek to the Kemah Boardwalk to get fresh seafood. It honestly had been about 2+ years since I've been to Kemah, so you can imagine my surprise when we got there and I saw a ROLLER COASTER! We made it through dinner (yum), saw a fireworks show (on my birthday!), and I dragged Miller over to the Boardwalk Bullet to buy tickets. He kept asking me why I was so adamant about riding it, and my only response was, "because it's my birthday!" Secretly, I was looking forward to this:

97. Ride a roller coaster

I think that was the best birthday gift of all -- being able to cross off a 101 goal on my actual birthday. The ride was surprisingly thrilling and I tried to snap some cool pics mid-ride but they all came out a little lot blurry. Here's the only good picture I took of Miller & I on our way up:

Overall - it was a great birthday. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
