The Ugly Truth About STTN

STTN: Sleeping Through the Night. The question a new parent is always asked by curious passers-by. The ultimate goal on any new parent's list. The moment where you think that the times are a-changing. Oh, those glorious 6 hours of uninterrupted bliss.

Baby books are chock full of tips, tricks, methodology and advice on getting your baby to sleep through the night. Rigid schedules, "tanking up" their tummies, keeping them awake all day; everyone seems to claim to have the sure-fire way to get babies to sleep.

Last night, Audrey gave us the best present she could give - she slept from 11:45pm - 5:45am without moving a muscle. It was the quietest 6 hours that we've experienced in the last 2½ months.

...and then she woke up. Today was one of the worst days we've had in quite some time. She was fussy beyond belief. No toy or activity could capture her attention. I could not nurse her long enough or as frequently as she needed. It was awful. I mentioned it to several of my mommy friends and apparently this behavior is par for the course for babies that are freshly STTN.

Why the hell wasn't that in any of my baby books???

Audrey is 2 months & 2 weeks old

Amen! No one tells you it will be hell for the first week of STTN. Maybe that is part of mommy amnesia. Congrats though, 2.5 months is awesome cause 6 months is just wrong to the human race.

It's a government conspiracy to keep this stuff hidden so we keep making more babies. Or maybe that's just the current theory my exhausted brain has cooked up. It will get better though. That's what everyone says anyway. Then again, these are the same people who never warned us in the first place...

Hmmm. Maybe I need to just go to bed and stop dreaming of conspiracies.
